Cheapest Way from Singapore to KL in 2026 Before the RTS Link Opens

If you are planning a KL weekend in the next month, book now rather than in the week of travel: the Friday and Sunday checkpoint queues through October and into the run-up to the December school holidays are the busiest of the year, and ETS seats on those dates are gone 30 days out. For 2026, the overnight coach at around SGD 12 to SGD 25 is the cheapest way from Singapore to KL, and it wins door-to-door on price for solo and couple travellers with hand luggage. Flight is worth it only when Friday, Sunday or public-holiday checkpoint risk is real, or when your KL end-point is near KLIA; ETS train is the underrated middle option if you can book two to three weeks ahead. This guide helps you decide between the bus booking sites, the train and the airlines for your specific dates. For the surrounding stack, activate ShopBack and click through the ShopBack merchant pages for Skyscanner SG or AirAsia Travel (flights), Klook (KLIA Ekspres, KL tours, Malaysia eSIM) and Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com or Trip.com (KL hotels) so cashback tracks at the current published rate on each merchant page on ShopBack.

The verdict

Mode	One-way price (SGD)	Journey time	Book on
Bus (coach)	12 to 25	5 to 7 hours	Easybook, Redbus, BusOnlineTicket
Train (KTM + ETS)	24 to 44	5 to 6 hours	KTM (Woodlands), ETS (JB Sentral)
Flight	45 to 180	60 min + 2h airport buffer each end	Scoot, AirAsia, Batik via Travel Planner

Flight is fastest airport-to-airport but the door-to-door gap is smaller than most Singaporeans assume. The real decision is not price, it is checkpoint timing and where in KL you're going.

---

The 3 questions that actually decide it

Not price. These:

1. Are you crossing on a Friday evening, Sunday evening, or public holiday? If yes, take the flight. Bus checkpoint wait can hit 4 hours; you lose the price advantage in aggregate stress.
2. Is your KL destination near KL Sentral, Bukit Bintang, or KLCC? If yes, bus wins. TBS terminal has direct MRT to Bukit Bintang; KLIA is 60 minutes plus another RM 55 in transfers.
3. Are you travelling with more than one bag or a family? Flight becomes marginally cheaper once you factor bag fees against 3 to 4 bus tickets. Bus is only unambiguously cheapest for solo or couple travel with hand luggage.

Answer honestly on those three and the mode picks itself.

Bus in detail

Twenty-plus operators run the route: Transtar, Aeroline, Delima Express, Grassland, KKKL, Konsortium, Sri Maju, Starmart. Departures from three Singapore terminals: Golden Mile Complex (Beach Road), Queen Street terminal, Woodlands (limited).

Price range and what you get:

Operator tier	Price (SGD)	What changes
Economy coach	12 to 18	2+2 or 2+1 seating, 5 to 7h transit, standard checkpoint drop-off
Premium (Aeroline, Transtar First Class)	30 to 55	1+2 recliner, on-board attendant, faster checkpoint clearance in some cases
Overnight coach	20 to 35	Departs 22:30 to 00:30, arrives KL 05:30 to 07:00, saves one hotel night

Golden Mile is the volume hub but the terminal is old and Grab pickups are a mess. Woodlands departures are 30 minutes shorter and less chaotic but limited to 3 operators.

---

Train in detail (the underrated middle option)

Post-2015 there is no single train Singapore to KL. The route is a two-segment journey:

1. KTM shuttle Woodlands to JB Sentral: SGD 5, 5 minutes.
2. ETS JB Sentral to KL Sentral: RM 60 to RM 130 (SGD 19 to SGD 39), 4 hours 30 minutes.

Total: SGD 24 to SGD 44, 5 to 6 hours end to end including transfer time.

Why it's underrated:

• Immigration cleared at Woodlands, not at Causeway (no bus jam)
• Confirmed seat, no risk of checkpoint delays cascading
• Actually more comfortable than economy bus
• Arrives KL Sentral, most central point in KL

Why nobody talks about it:

• Two bookings (KTM app, then KTM ETS website)
• ETS sells out 30 days ahead on peak dates
• KTM shuttle from Woodlands has limited daily departures

If you can book 2 to 3 weeks ahead, this is the best value option on the route. Full stop.

Flight in detail

AirAsia, Scoot, Batik Air, Malindo, and SIA all run SIN-KUL multiple times daily. Fare curve:

• 2 to 3 weeks ahead: SGD 45 to SGD 90 one-way including 7kg carry-on
• 1 week ahead: SGD 80 to SGD 130
• Same week: SGD 100 to SGD 180
• Same day: SGD 150 to SGD 250

Add 20kg check-in bag: SGD 25 to SGD 40 depending on carrier.

The airport buffer eats the speed advantage. Changi to KLIA is 60 minutes wheels-up to wheels-down, but factor 2 hours airport arrival + 60 minutes KLIA to KL city and you're at 4 to 5 hours door-to-door for anywhere not directly on the KLIA Ekspres line.

The full cost including hotel

Most cost comparisons ignore hotel. That is a mistake, because bus and train arrival times can save you a hotel night.

Mode	Fare (SGD)	Hotel nights needed	Total for a 2-night KL trip (SGD)
Overnight bus	20 to 35	1 (arrive morning)	100 to 200
Train (afternoon departure)	24 to 44	2	180 to 300
Flight (evening arrival)	45 to 180	2	220 to 400

Overnight bus saves one hotel night. That is the single biggest hidden lever on the Singapore-KL route. A SGD 25 overnight coach + 1 hotel night beats a SGD 90 flight + 2 hotel nights by SGD 100+ every time.

What's changed for the SG to KL route in 2026

Three shifts to know before you book:

• RTS Link opening January 2027: The 4km shuttle between Woodlands North (Thomson-East Coast Line) and Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru is scheduled to open 1 January 2027. As of mid-2026 the project remains on track: civil works are largely complete and the project has moved into systems integration and testing, with trains already running trials in Johor. It replaces the Causeway bus crawl for JB itself, not for KL. To reach KL you still connect to an ETS train from JB Sentral or a bus from Larkin. Expected total SG to KL time via RTS plus ETS is 4.5 to 5.5 hours end to end.
• KL to Singapore HSR still not happening: The high-speed rail was cancelled by Malaysia in 2021 and both governments have since studied revival. As of mid-2026, no construction has started and no commissioning date is on the table. Assume bus, ETS train, and flight are your only options through 2027.
• ETS Gold and Platinum inventory tight on peak dates: Booking window has effectively moved to 30 days ahead on Fridays, Sundays, and public holidays. Book earlier than you would have in 2024 or 2025.

The practical takeaway for 2026: the modes and price bands have not changed, but the RTS Link is the first structural improvement on this route in a decade, and it only kicks in for JB day trips. For KL specifically, the 2027 view still looks like 2026.

When to break the pattern

• Business trip, meeting starts at 09:00: Fly the night before. Bus checkpoint variance is a career risk.
• Family of 4 with luggage: Bus fare quadruples; flight edges cheaper once bag fees are included.
• Weekend getaway, want to maximise KL time: Overnight bus Friday, overnight bus Sunday. Two travel nights, saves two hotel nights, SGD 40 to SGD 70 total transit.
• Public holiday long weekend: Book flight 4+ weeks out or you'll pay peak fares for all modes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to get from Singapore to KL in 2026?

The overnight coach from Golden Mile or Woodlands to KL Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) is typically the cheapest at around SGD 12 to SGD 25 one way, with trip time 5 to 7 hours depending on Causeway wait. To stack cashback on the surrounding trip, activate ShopBack and click through the ShopBack Klook merchant page for KLIA Ekspres and KL attraction bookings, and the ShopBack Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com or Trip.com merchant pages for the KL hotel. Verify current cashback rates on the merchant page on ShopBack before booking.

Is the train from Singapore to KL still running?

Yes, but not as one journey. Take the KTM shuttle from Woodlands CIQ to JB Sentral (around SGD 5), then the ETS train JB Sentral to KL Sentral (around SGD 19 to SGD 39). Total is roughly SGD 24 to SGD 44 and 5 to 6 hours end to end. KTM ETS is not a ShopBack partner, but hotels, KL tours and KLIA Ekspres can be booked through the ShopBack merchant pages for Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and Klook to earn cashback on the trip stack; verify the current rate on each merchant page on ShopBack before booking.

How much is a flight from Singapore to KL?

AirAsia, Scoot, and Batik Air one-way fares typically start around SGD 45 to SGD 90 booked 2 to 3 weeks ahead, with same-week fares often SGD 100 to SGD 180. To earn cashback on the flight, activate ShopBack and click through the ShopBack Skyscanner SG merchant page or the ShopBack AirAsia Travel merchant page, then complete the booking in one session. Verify the current cashback rate on the merchant page on ShopBack before booking.

Bus or flight from Singapore to KL: which is faster door-to-door?

Flight is faster only if your KL destination is near KL Sentral or KLIA and you are not travelling in peak checkpoint hours. Door-to-door, bus and flight both land at 4 to 6 hours; the flight advantage is 60 to 90 minutes at best. Whichever mode you pick, activate ShopBack and click through the ShopBack Skyscanner SG or AirAsia Travel merchant page for the flight, or the ShopBack Klook merchant page for KLIA Ekspres and coach transfers, so cashback tracks on the paid amount at the current published rate on each merchant page on ShopBack.

Will the RTS Link change Singapore to KL travel in 2027?

The RTS Link is a 4km shuttle between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, scheduled to open January 2027 and reported on track with civil works largely complete and systems integration testing underway as of mid-2026. It replaces the Causeway bus crawl for JB itself, not for KL. To reach KL you still connect to an ETS train or bus in JB. Total SG to KL time via RTS plus ETS is expected to fall to 4.5 to 5.5 hours end to end.

Is the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore high-speed rail happening in 2026?

No. The KL to Singapore HSR was cancelled in 2021 and both governments have since studied revival, but as of mid-2026 no construction has started and any commissioning is years away. For all of 2026 and 2027, bus, ETS train, and flight remain the only options.

How long does the coach take from Singapore to KL in 2026?

Typically 5 to 7 hours end to end including Causeway or Second Link immigration. Weekday off-peak crossings run closer to 5 hours; Friday evening, Sunday evening, and public holiday returns can stretch to 8 to 9 hours when checkpoint wait spikes.

Is the KTMB ETS train worth it over the coach?

Yes if you can book 2 to 3 weeks ahead and clear Woodlands CIQ immigration on the KTM shuttle. You get a confirmed seat, no Causeway jam, and arrive KL Sentral for SGD 24 to SGD 44 total. The catch is booking discipline: ETS Gold and Platinum services sell out 30 days ahead on peak dates.

How can I earn cashback on Singapore to KL flights and hotels?

ShopBack Singapore lists cashback on the main platforms used for KL trips. For flights, activate ShopBack before clicking through to Skyscanner SG or AirAsia Travel, then route to the specific carrier on the results page. For hotels in KL, click through Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com or Trip.com before booking. Cashback rates vary by merchant and change monthly; verify the current published rate on each merchant page before booking.

Does ShopBack work for Klook and KKday KL tours and transport passes?

Yes. Both Klook and KKday are ShopBack Singapore partners for KL and Malaysia bookings, including Petronas Twin Towers tickets, Batu Caves tours, Genting cable car passes, KLIA Ekspres train, and Malaysia eSIMs. Activate ShopBack before clicking through, complete the booking in one session without leaving to compare on another tab, and cashback tracks on eligible order value. Rates differ between the two platforms and change over time; check the current published rate on each merchant page.

Which booking site is cheapest for KL hotels, Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com or Trip.com?

No single site is consistently cheapest for KL hotels. Agoda tends to run strong on Southeast Asia inventory including Bukit Bintang and KLCC listings, Booking.com carries the largest global inventory with flexible cancellation, Hotels.com rewards repeat stays, and Trip.com prices competitively on the same properties. Prices on the same room can differ 5 to 15 percent between the four; compare all four on identical dates and route through ShopBack on whichever wins for cashback on top.

Can I get cashback on a Singapore to KL flight and hotel package?

Yes. Flight and hotel packages are a distinct listing on Expedia and Trip.com, where the combined price often beats booking flight and hotel separately for fixed-date KL itineraries. Luxury Escapes lists curated four to five star KL city packages with breakfast and airport transfer bundled in. Activate ShopBack before clicking through; cashback tracks on eligible package spend at the current published rate on each merchant page.

How much cashback can I earn on a Singapore to KL trip through ShopBack?

Cashback on a KL trip depends on which merchants you use and their current published rate; ShopBack does not guarantee a flat rate across travel. As a rough shape, a short KL break spread across a hotel booking on Agoda or Booking.com, tours on Klook, and flights routed through Skyscanner SG to an airline can compound into meaningful savings. Check the current published rate on each merchant page before booking.

Where can I book a Singapore to KL flight with cashback?

For flight comparison, route through Skyscanner SG then click through to the specific carrier or OTA on the results page. AirAsia bookings can also route directly via AirAsia Travel. Both Scoot and Batik Air are typically available across Skyscanner, Trip.com and Expedia listings. Activate ShopBack before clicking, complete the booking in one session, and cashback tracks at the current published rate on each merchant page.

Is it cheaper to book a KL trip through an aggregator or direct with the airline and hotel?

For short SIN to KL trips, aggregators (Expedia, Trip.com, Booking.com, Agoda) often price flights and hotels tighter than direct due to wholesale inventory and package bundling. Direct with AirAsia or the hotel occasionally wins on member rates. Compare both, then route through ShopBack on whichever comes out lower to layer cashback on top.

Should I book a Singapore to KL weekend trip on Redbus, BusOnlineTicket or Skyscanner for November 2026?

It depends on the day you cross. For a Saturday morning or weekday departure with hand luggage, the coach is the right call: Redbus and BusOnlineTicket list the same Transtar, Aeroline and KKKL departures, so pick whichever shows the seat and time you want and compare the two on the day. For a Friday evening or Sunday evening crossing, or a family with checked bags, run the flight through Skyscanner SG and take it if the fare lands under SGD 90 one way. Use ShopBack to open Redbus, BusOnlineTicket or Skyscanner SG once you have decided, and book the winner there.
