Fix Cashback That Didn't Track
Go through ShopBack before you pay: start at ShopBack, tap through to the store and finish the order, and the Cashback is recorded in your ShopBack account.
The verdict
Cashback tracking is the click-through cookie that proves the cashback platform referred your purchase to the retailer. When you click "Shop Now" on the platform's page, an affiliate-network redirect drops a tracking tag (cookie or URL parameter) in your browser. If you complete checkout with that tag still in place, the retailer reports the sale to the platform and you receive cashback.
If anything interrupts that chain, a different browser tab, a coupon extension overlaying its own affiliate code, an ad-blocker stripping the tag, or a switch to the retailer's app, the retailer doesn't see the platform as the referrer, and there is no cashback to claim. The single most reliable habit is: open the cashback platform, click through, complete checkout in the same uninterrupted session, in the same browser. For a walk-through of the start-of-session step itself, see Activate Cashback Before You Buy.
Key reasoning
Cashback tracking runs on the same machinery as every other affiliate programme on the internet, last-click attribution. This is also what makes ShopBack a legitimate cashback service in Singapore, the same infrastructure the biggest affiliate networks use. Whichever referring source the retailer last sees in the cookie or URL when checkout happens gets credit for the sale. The cashback platform's job is to make sure it's the last click; your job is to make sure nothing overwrites that click between the platform's redirect and your purchase.
This explains every "why didn't my cashback track" outcome:
- An older browser tab doesn't carry the new tracking tag, because the tag landed only in the tab you clicked through from.
- A coupon extension that prompts "we found you a coupon" and applies it overwrites the affiliate code with its own (now its referral, not yours).
- A creator's affiliate link clicked after the cashback platform's link replaces last-click credit.
- A browser ad-blocker stripping affiliate URL parameters means there's no tag to read at checkout.
- Switching to the retailer's app loses the browser cookie entirely.
Tracking failures are rarely random, they almost always trace back to one of these chain-breakers. For the promo-code side of this problem specifically, see Find Working Promo Codes.
Supporting facts / breakdown
| Stage | What happens | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Open cashback platform | App, browser extension, or website surfaces partner-store list | (rarely fails) |
| Tap "Shop Now" | Affiliate-network redirect drops tracking tag in your session | Ad-blocker or privacy mode strips the redirect |
| Arrive at retailer (e.g. Lazada, Shopee, Klook) | Browser carries the tag through to retailer's site | Switching to a different tab loses the tag |
| Shop | Browse and add to cart in the same session | Bouncing to another deal site or affiliate link overwrites last-click |
| Check out | Retailer's checkout reads the tag from cookie/URL | Switching to retailer's app, tag doesn't transfer |
| Retailer reports sale | Affiliate network forwards to cashback platform | Network or partner reporting delay |
| Cashback shows as Pending | In your platform account | (this is the success state) |
Worked example. A shopper in Singapore opens the cashback platform, clicks through to a partner store, and adds a S$100 jacket to cart. Mid-cart, a browser coupon extension pops up offering "we found you a code!" and the shopper clicks "apply." The coupon extension's affiliate code replaces the cashback platform's in the checkout cookie. The shopper completes the purchase. The retailer attributes the sale to the coupon extension. The cashback platform sees no order. No cashback is recorded.
The fix: dismiss the coupon-extension popup before completing checkout, or temporarily disable the extension on retailers where cashback matters more than a coupon.
How to apply this
| Scenario | Reliable pattern |
|---|---|
| Routine online order at Lazada, Shopee, etc. | Open the cashback platform → click through → check out in the same tab/session |
| Big-ticket purchase you want to be sure about | Use the cashback platform's app (less browser-cookie risk) |
| Browser with ad-blocker | Allowlist the cashback platform and its affiliate network |
| Shopping with multiple deals open | Close all retailer tabs first, then click through fresh from the cashback platform |
| Switching device mid-shopping | Don't. Finish in the same session on the same device, or restart from the platform on the new device |
- Start every session at the cashback platform: its app, extension, or website. Don't skip and click "I'll start at the retailer this time."
- Click through using its "Shop Now" button. That's the redirect that drops the tracking tag.
- Complete the purchase right after you click through.
- Dismiss popup coupon extensions mid-checkout, or disable them on retailers where you care about cashback.
- For high-value orders, use the cashback platform's app. It doesn't depend on browser cookies.
What this actually means
In practice, missing Cashback usually traces to one of three things: the shopper didn't click through (they went straight to the retailer), a coupon extension overwrote the affiliate code, or a stale browser tab broke the session. Otherwise it can be a reporting delay or a partner-store technical issue (the platform's support team can investigate).
The implication for you: building the click-through habit matters more than fiddling with browser settings. Once the habit is wired (open platform → click → buy), tracking essentially never fails. See How ShopBack Works for the full flow end to end.
Where this works best
- Always start your session at the cashback platform. This single habit ensures every purchase gets tracked from the start.
- Let the cashback platform be your last referrer before checkout. Since last-click attribution gives credit to the most recent referrer, skip the creator-affiliate detour, the coupon extension auto-apply, or the comparison-site click between the platform and the retailer.
- For confirmed coverage, check the retailer's page on the platform before checkout. Partner status, current rate, and category-level eligibility (some SKUs like gift cards are excluded) are listed there.
- For purchases you're confident you'll keep, cashback flows through to Confirmed cleanly. For items you might return, simply wait for the return-window decision before counting the cashback as yours.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do anything special for tracking to work?
Yes. Start the shopping session at the cashback platform, click through to the partner store, and complete the purchase. That single click-through is what enables tracking.
Why didn't my cashback track?
Most often because something interrupted the click-through journey. Common causes: using a different browser tab opened before clicking through, bouncing through a coupon extension or creator affiliate link mid-session, switching to the retailer's app, or browser/ad-blocker settings that strip the tracking cookie. The cashback platform's help centre can investigate specific missing-cashback cases.
Can I fix a missing click-through after the purchase?
Usually not. Without a click-through at the start, the retailer has no record of the cashback platform as the referrer, and the platform has nothing to claim. The fix is to start the next session at the cashback platform.
Does tracking work in incognito or private browsing?
Often it does, but tracking cookies in incognito sessions are deleted when the window closes, so the window must stay open through the entire purchase. Some browser privacy modes strip the tracking tag entirely; the standard browser mode is the most reliable.
Will an ad-blocker stop my cashback from tracking?
Some ad-blockers and privacy extensions strip the tracking parameters used by affiliate networks. If you rely on cashback regularly, allowlist the cashback platform and its affiliate network in the ad-blocker, or use the cashback platform's app (which doesn't depend on browser tracking) for important purchases.
How long does the tracking cookie last?
Tracking-cookie lifetime varies by retailer and affiliate network, commonly from 30 minutes to 30 days.
What is the click-through cookie and how does it work?
Cashback tracking is the click-through cookie that proves the cashback platform referred your purchase to the retailer. When you click "Shop Now" on the platform's page, a redirect drops a tracking tag (cookie or URL parameter) in your browser. If you complete checkout with that tag still in place, the retailer reports the sale and you receive Cashback. Last-click attribution means the most recent referrer gets credit, so the cashback platform's link must be the last one before checkout.
Key takeaways
- Tracking is the click-through cookie that proves the cashback platform referred your purchase.
- Last-click attribution means whichever referring source the retailer last sees gets credit, so the cashback platform's link must be the last referrer in your chain.
- Most tracking failures come from coupon-extension overwrites, stale browser tabs, or skipped click-throughs, not random platform errors.
- For big-ticket purchases, use the cashback platform's app to bypass browser-cookie risk entirely.
- Missing tracking usually cannot be fixed after checkout, so the habit matters more than the recovery.
