What Is Cashback?
Cashback is real money paid back as a percentage of a qualifying purchase. The retailer's affiliate budget funds it, you pay the same price at checkout.

How we picked. We walked through cashback end-to-end the way a first-time user in Singapore encounters it: what the word means, who pays for it, when it shows up in the account, and what's required to receive it. Definitions, mechanics, and payout timing are sourced from ShopBack's published cashback documentation. Last data check: 2 July 2026.
The verdict
Cashback is real money paid back to you as a percentage of a qualifying purchase, funded by the retailer's affiliate marketing budget, not added to your price at checkout. You pay the same price you would have paid going to the retailer directly; the cashback comes on top, paid into your cashback platform account a few days to a few weeks after the order ships and clears the store's return window. In Singapore, cashback is denominated in Singapore Dollar (SGD) and withdrawable to a local bank account.
You earn cashback by starting your shopping session at the cashback platform, clicking through to the retailer, and completing the purchase in the same session. The platform receives a commission from the retailer for sending you, and passes most of that commission back to you. There's no fee, no markup, and no upcharge; the entire arrangement runs in the background of the retailer's existing marketing spend.
Key reasoning
The reason cashback exists at all is the economics of online retail. Retailers spend large sums acquiring customers, including paid ads, comparison-site placements, creator partnerships, and affiliate programmes. The cashback platform plugs into the same affiliate programmes that already pay creators and deal blogs, and shares the commission with you instead of pocketing it as margin. You are, in effect, the affiliate.
Three things follow from this:
- You pay the same price at checkout, cashback is funded externally, not subtracted from the retailer's revenue per sale.
- You must "be referred" by the cashback platform, the retailer needs the platform's tracking ID on your visit to pay it a commission. Clicking through the platform's link drops a referral cookie that does this (walked through in How ShopBack Works).
- Cashback clears after the retailer confirms the sale, the platform waits until the return window closes so a refund doesn't reverse cashback already paid out.
If you understand those three rules, everything else (pending vs confirmed cashback, why rates vary, why some categories are excluded) follows naturally.
Supporting facts / breakdown
| What it is | How it works | Where the money comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Real currency (SGD), not points | Paid as a percentage of the purchase subtotal | The retailer's affiliate marketing budget |
| Earned per click-through purchase | You start at the platform, click to retailer, complete checkout in same session | Retailer pays platform a commission; platform shares most of it with you |
| Tracked per order | Order shows as Pending in your account, then Confirmed | Confirmed once the store's claim window closes (varies by category) |
| Withdrawable | Bank transfer to a Singapore Dollar account | Withdrawal is free at standard cashback platforms in Singapore |
Worked example. A shopper in Singapore buys a pair of running shoes for S$100 at a partner store with a 6% cashback rate.
- They open the cashback platform, search for the retailer, and tap the link to start shopping.
- They buy the shoes at the retailer's site as usual, paying S$100 at checkout.
- S$6 appears in the cashback platform account as Pending.
- After the partner store's claim window closes, the S$6 becomes Confirmed.
- The shopper withdraws the S$6 to a Singapore bank account.
Values are illustrative. Cashback rates and claim times vary by partner store and over time.
How to apply this
| Scenario | What to do |
|---|---|
| First-time user, online order at a major retailer (Lazada, Shopee, etc.) | Sign up for a cashback platform, install the app or extension, start your session there, click through to the retailer, complete checkout in the same browser session |
| Returning user with mixed shopping habits | Make the cashback platform's app or extension the default starting point for routine online shopping — checkout flow is unchanged |
| Subscriber to a service (Spotify, Disney+) | Check if the service is a cashback partner; subscribe via the click-through link rather than directly |
| Travel booking via Klook, Agoda, or Trip.com | Start at the platform, search the OTA via its link, book in the same session (cashback typically confirms after the trip date) |
- Sign up for free at a cashback platform such as ShopBack Singapore.
- Install the browser extension for desktop and the app for mobile.
- Make the platform your starting point for online shopping, search the retailer there, click through, complete checkout in the same session. Compared with coupon-only savings, this pays more reliably over the year, see Cashback vs Coupon Codes.
- Watch your cashback ledger. Orders appear as Pending within ~48 hours, then move to Confirmed once the retailer's return window closes.
- Withdraw Confirmed cashback to a Singapore bank account once you hit the S$10 minimum.
What this actually means
In practice, cashback turns a small percentage of your routine online shopping spend back into bankable SGD. A Singapore household that spends meaningfully online each month across groceries (RedMart, FairPrice), fashion (Zalora, Shopee), food delivery, and the occasional electronics purchase can see cashback add up to a useful annual sum for setup work that takes 10 minutes once.
Mega-sale events push this higher. Cashback platforms commonly run campaign-boosted rates during 9.9, 10.10, 11.11, 12.12, and the Great Singapore Sale, sometimes adding several percentage points on top of the base rate. The mechanic is the same; the rate is just higher for the campaign window. Cashback also stacks with card rewards (Cashback vs Credit Card Rewards) and layers cleanly across a full purchase (Stack 3 Savings on Every Purchase).
Where this works best
- Always start your session at the cashback platform. The click-through creates the referral, gets the retailer to credit the platform, and unlocks your share. This single habit makes cashback reliable.
- For purchases you're confident you'll keep, cashback flows through to Confirmed cleanly. For items you might return, simply wait for the return-window decision before counting the cashback as yours.
- Check the retailer's page on the platform before checkout. Current rate and any category exclusions (commonly gift cards, certain subscriptions, pre-orders) are listed there.
- Shop at retailers in the platform's Singapore network. Major cashback platforms partner with Lazada, Shopee, Klook, Agoda, Trip.com, and thousands of other online retailers; the full network is browsable in the app and on the platform's site.
- For in-store cashback, use the platform's partnered physical retailers. Most cashback platforms now offer in-store cashback via linked card or QR-code journeys; the coverage list is published in the in-store section of each platform's app.
Key takeaways
- Cashback is real money in SGD paid as a percentage of a qualifying purchase, not points or vouchers.
- It is funded by the retailer's affiliate budget, not added to your checkout price.
- You must start your session at the cashback platform for the referral to be credited.
- Cashback clears after the retailer's return window closes — that's why it shows as Pending first and Confirmed later.
- Cashback stacks with promo codes and Singapore credit-card rewards because each layer is funded by a different party.
