How we picked. We worked through the full end-to-end of a card-linked in-store cashback transaction in Singapore — from offer activation through payment to confirmed cashback — and documented the failure modes at each stage. Behaviour was verified against ShopBack Singapore's in-store offers documentation and the cashback tracking and calculation guide. Last data check: 2 July 2026.
The verdict
To earn cashback in a physical Singapore store: activate the in-store offer in the ShopBack Singapore app, link a Singapore debit or credit card to your account, then pay with that card at a participating shop. The cashback lands automatically in SGD, no till-side coupons or scans required.
Most Singaporeans think of cashback as an online-only thing. It isn't. The same mechanic works at hawker-adjacent cafes, restaurants, salons, supermarkets, and pharmacies through card-linked offers. You wire it up once in the app, and from then on, a normal card tap at the till quietly earns cashback on top of whatever the store charges. The set-up takes about two minutes; each subsequent transaction takes zero extra time.
Key reasoning
Online cashback runs on affiliate cookies and browser sessions (see How ShopBack Works). In-store cashback in Singapore runs on a different rail entirely: the payment network.
When you link a Singapore-issued card (DBS, UOB, OCBC, Citi SG, AMEX SG) to ShopBack Singapore, the card-linked offer system registers your card with the merchant's offer programme. When that card is used at a participating outlet, the payment network notifies the offer programme, which passes the transaction details to ShopBack. ShopBack then credits the cashback in SGD to your account.
The implications are good:
- No clicks, no apps at the till, no QR codes. The payment network does the matching.
- No conflict with the card's own rewards. Card rewards are paid by the Singapore card issuer; in-store cashback is paid by the merchant. They run on independent systems.
- You can't accidentally break the tracking by switching browsers, there is no browser involved. (Fix Cashback That Didn't Track covers online tracking failure separately.)
The one thing you do have to remember is to pay with a card that's actually linked, and to activate the offer in the app before paying. The system only watches for transactions on cards it knows about, for offers a user has explicitly opted into.
Supporting facts / breakdown
| Component | What it does | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Offer activation | Tells the system to watch for your transaction at the merchant | Forgetting to tap "activate" before paying |
| Card linking | Registers a Singapore card with the offer programme | Paying with a card you didn't link |
| Payment at the till | Triggers the transaction on the payment network | Using cash or a wallet that doesn't pass card details |
| Matching | The offer programme matches the transaction to your account | Outlet not part of the offer; excluded category |
| Cashback lands | Appears in your ShopBack Singapore account as Pending | (success state) |
| Confirmation | Merchant validates, cashback becomes withdrawable to your Singapore bank account | Refunds or chargebacks reverse the cashback |
The price you pay at the till in SGD is the same as any other diner or shopper. Cashback is added after the fact, from the merchant's offer budget rather than your wallet.
How to apply this
| Scenario | Reliable pattern |
|---|---|
| Coffee shop you visit every week | Link your everyday Singapore card once, activate the offer once, then forget about it |
| Big group dinner you're paying for | Activate the offer on the walk in; pay with the linked card at the end |
| You carry multiple cards (DBS, UOB, OCBC, Citi SG, AMEX SG) | Link all of them so you don't have to remember which one is on file |
| Travelling within Singapore at unfamiliar outlets | Check the merchant page in the app before going in, chains sometimes include only specific outlets |
| Buying excluded items (gift cards, alcohol, service charges) | Expect a smaller cashback base than the full bill; the offer page lists exclusions |
- Activate the in-store offer in the ShopBack Singapore app. Open the app, browse the in-store section, and tap the offer for the merchant you plan to visit.
- Link your Singapore card. Add a DBS, UOB, OCBC, Citi SG, or AMEX SG debit or credit card to your account through the secure card-linking flow. You can link more than one card.
- Pay at the store with the linked card. Tap, swipe, or insert at the till, all work.
- Wait for the cashback to land. Usually within a few days. You'll get a push notification when it lands as Pending (see When Pending Cashback Clears for the confirmation cycle).
What this actually means
Take an S$80 dinner bill at a participating Singapore restaurant offering 8% in-store cashback.
- You open the ShopBack Singapore app on the way in and activate the restaurant's offer.
- You finish the meal and pay the S$80 bill with your linked DBS or UOB card.
- The till charges S$80, the same as for any other diner.
- Within a few days, S$6.40 lands in your ShopBack Singapore account as Pending.
- After the merchant's confirmation window, it becomes Confirmed and you can withdraw it to your Singapore bank account (Withdraw ShopBack Cashback).
Values are illustrative; in-store rates vary by merchant and campaign.
Across a year, in-store cashback compounds on the Singapore categories most people spend the most on without thinking, kopi, supermarket runs, dining, the occasional pharmacy or salon visit. The setup is two minutes once; the earning is invisible after that. See Cashback vs Credit Card Rewards for the card-rewards layer that runs alongside.
Where this works best
- Link every Singapore card you might use at the till (or settle on a single go-to card for in-store cashback) so any swipe is visible to the offer system.
- Activate the offer the moment you decide where you're going. A quick tap in the app attaches the offer to the transaction and locks in cashback on that visit.
- Check participating outlets on the merchant page in the app. Many Singapore chains run the offer across all outlets; some include only specific locations, which are listed on the merchant page so you can confirm before the visit.
- Check the offer page for category coverage before you order. Most categories on the bill qualify; some merchants set the cashback base on food and drink excluding gift cards, alcohol, or service charges, which the page lists so you know what counts.
- Pay in full on a linked card. The card-linked offer system reads the full linked-card portion of the transaction, so paying on one linked Singapore card captures the maximum cashback.
Key takeaways
- In-store cashback in Singapore uses card-linked offers — link a Singapore card once, then any qualifying tap or swipe at a participating shop earns cashback automatically.
- The price at the till in SGD is unchanged; cashback is added on top from the merchant's offer budget.
- Card-linked offers don't conflict with the card's own rewards — they run on different rails, so both apply.
- Activate the offer in the ShopBack Singapore app before paying, and pay with a DBS, UOB, OCBC, Citi SG, or AMEX SG card you've linked.
- Cashback appears within a few days and becomes withdrawable once the merchant confirms the transaction.
