History of Sears
Sears, Roebuck and Company or Sears was founded by Alvah Curtis Roebuck and Richard Warren Sears in 1893, after Richard Sears came up with a mail-order watch business in 1886. Then he met a watch repairman (Alvah Curtis Roebuck) and they moved their business to Chicago. After selling the business, they started the A. C. Roebuck watch company in 1892 and renamed the company to Sears, Roebuck and Company in 1893.
After major ups and downs in business, Sears and Rosenwald launched Sears, Roebuck and Co. in New York and replaced the original business. 1906 saw the opening of the Sears Merchandise Building Tower in Chicago s West Side; in 1908, Sears resigned and handed over the company to Rosenwald. Its first department store was opened in 1925 and currently has its headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The management of Kmart (the big box chain of America) bought Sears in 2005 and formed Sears Holdings.
