How we picked. We mapped how cashback and direct merchant promotions are funded in Singapore, where each one lands in the transaction, and whether they're typically stackable on the same order. Affiliate-commission mechanics are sourced from ShopBack's published cashback documentation; merchant-promotion behaviour reflects standard retailer-side discounting patterns at Lazada, Shopee, FairPrice, and other SG partners. The verdict

Cashback and a retailer's own promotions are funded from different parts of the retailer's budget, so in most cases they stack on the same purchase in Singapore. The right answer is "use both" rather than "choose one".

A direct merchant promotion (a Lazada 9.9 or 11.11 mega sale, a Shopee flash deal, a FairPrice weekly catalogue offer, a Great Singapore Sale event, a sign-up code) lowers the price at checkout. Cashback is paid afterwards from the retailer's affiliate marketing budget, calculated against the final price the shopper pays. When both apply, the saving is layered: the promotion lowers the price, and cashback is earned on the lower price.

The main exception is a small number of mega-sale flash deals whose terms explicitly exclude affiliate-referred sales. Where that exclusion applies, the shopper has to choose one layer.

Key reasoning

The retailer has two separate budget pots that fund customer savings.

The affiliate marketing budget is what the retailer pays to anyone who sent the customer to the store. Cashback platforms, creators, comparison sites, deal blogs all draw from this budget. When the shopper clicks through ShopBack Singapore and completes a purchase at Lazada, Shopee, or another partner, the retailer pays the platform a commission, and the platform shares most of it back as cashback (this is the mechanic covered in What Is Cashback?). The retailer's revenue per sale is unchanged.

The retailer's own margin is what funds direct promotions: the 9.9, 10.10, 11.11, 12.12 mega sales, Shopee flash deals, FairPrice weekly catalogues, GSS markdowns, member discounts. The retailer accepts a smaller revenue per sale on those orders, in exchange for higher volume or new-customer acquisition. The reduced price hits at checkout, immediately.

Because the two come from different pots, they typically don't compete:

1. The promotion lowers the price the shopper pays at checkout.
2. Cashback is calculated on the final price the shopper actually paid, not the pre-discount price.
3. The combined saving is larger than either layer alone for almost any combination of sale percentage and cashback rate.

The exception is when the retailer doesn't want to additionally pay the affiliate commission on an already-deep discount. In that case, the promotion's terms exclude affiliate-referred sales. This is most common on mega-sale flash deals, exclusive member-only events, or clearance pricing. Even then, the merchant's ShopBack Singapore page typically flags the exclusion so the shopper knows in advance.

The structural answer is that cashback is the always-on baseline; mega sales and weekly catalogues are the occasional booster. When the booster fires, both layers run together.

What this actually means

A shopper plans a S$150 purchase at a Singapore fashion retailer on Lazada that's running a 15 percent off 9.9 mega-sale storewide. The retailer is a ShopBack partner and lists its current cashback rate on the merchant's ShopBack Singapore page.

Sale only, no cashback path: the shopper navigates directly to the Lazada app and buys at S$127.50 (15 percent off S$150). They don't click through ShopBack Singapore, so no affiliate referral is captured and no cashback accrues. Saving: S$22.50.

Cashback only, no sale path: the shopper buys on a regular-priced day. They click through ShopBack Singapore, complete the purchase at S$150. Cashback accrues at the partner store's rate against the S$150 price. Saving: the cashback amount.

Both stacked path: the shopper clicks through ShopBack Singapore during the 9.9 sale, buys at S$127.50, and cashback accrues at the partner store's rate against the S$127.50 final price. Saving: S$22.50 from the sale plus the cashback amount, the largest of the three outcomes.

The stacked path beats either path alone for almost any combination of sale percentage and cashback rate. The only requirement is the click-through happens before the purchase and the promotion doesn't exclude affiliate referrals. Where this works best

• Check the merchant's ShopBack Singapore page before checkout. Stackability is the default for most promotions, and the page flags any 9.9, 11.11, or 12.12 mega-sale flash deal or member-only event whose terms specify a single savings layer; in those rare cases, pick the larger nominal saving.
• For a one-time bonus larger than the cashback equivalent (e.g. first-purchase credit, anniversary voucher), lean on the bonus as the active layer and take the larger nominal saving.
