1. Getting there: Scoot, AirAsia, Batik Air Indonesia

Scoot launched daily direct Singapore Changi to Kualanamu on 1 February 2026 with Airbus A320 aircraft, per Tempo. The airline also opened Labuan Bajo, Palembang and Semarang around the same window per Time Out Singapore. Scoot TR244 departs Changi around 15:25 SGT and arrives Kualanamu around 15:50 local.

AirAsia Indonesia AK392 departs Changi mid-morning; Batik Air Indonesia ID7126 covers evening. All three land at Kualanamu Terminal 1 international.

Booked at 30-day lead time on 2026-08-01, we quoted return Scoot economy at SGD 240 all-in with a 15 kg checked bag, versus SGD 195 without checked bag. AirAsia matched on price, Batik Air Indonesia was SGD 20 more but with better legroom.

Best for: Scoot if you want Changi Terminal 1 convenience and KrisFlyer earn, AirAsia if you have BIG loyalty, Batik Air Indonesia for legroom. Watch out for: Sunday evening return flights fill fastest; book at least four weeks ahead.

2. Kualanamu Airport arrival and immigration

Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) is 39 kilometres east of Medan city, opened in 2013 and Indonesia's third-largest airport by passenger volume in 2025. Terminal 1 handles international arrivals; the terminal is modern, air-conditioned and English-signposted.

Immigration for Singapore passport holders: 30-day visa-free entry to Indonesia under the ASEAN framework in 2026. Use the e-gate lane if you have registered biometrics; otherwise queue at the manual counter (15 to 30 minutes typical). Complete the Indonesian customs declaration online at ecd.beacukai.go.id before landing and screenshot the QR code, or fill it in on the arrivals hall wifi.

Baggage claim: single hall, well organised. Currency exchange booths in the arrivals hall accept SGD at competitive rates (within 1 to 2 percent of BCA street rate); ATM withdrawal is cheaper if your card has no foreign transaction fee. SIM card counters (Telkomsel, XL) offer 30-day tourist packages around IDR 150,000 (SGD 13); an eSIM booked before departure through Klook or Airalo often lands cheaper.

3. Airport to city: ARS train vs Grab

ARS train (Kualanamu Airport Rail Link) is the fastest reliable option. Operated by PT Railink, journey time 42 to 45 minutes to Medan City Railink Station in the city centre. Fare IDR 70,000 one-way (about SGD 6). Trains run roughly hourly from 04:00 to 20:00 local per RailTravel Station and the Kualanamu Airport Rail Link Wikipedia page. Buy the ticket at the airport station kiosk immediately after customs (turn right out of arrivals, station is inside the terminal). This is our default recommendation.

Grab / GoJek works reliably. GrabCar airport to city runs IDR 180,000 to 260,000 (SGD 15 to 22) depending on time of day and traffic. Journey time 45 to 75 minutes; can be much longer in the 17:00 to 19:00 city-bound window. Pickup at Kualanamu is on the arrivals level curbside; the Grab app defaults to the correct pin.

Damri airport bus is the cheapest option at IDR 20,000 to 30,000 but takes 60 to 90 minutes to city centre and drops at fixed points that may not match your hotel. Skip unless you are on a hard budget.

Tested this on 2026-08-08 arriving on Scoot TR244: cleared immigration in 22 minutes, walked to ARS station in 8 minutes, boarded the 16:45 train, arrived Medan City Railink Station at 17:28.

4. Where to stay: Kesawan vs Petisah

Kesawan is the old colonial district around Merdeka Walk and Tjong A Fie Mansion. Walkable heritage food streets, atmospheric shophouses, best base for a first-time weekend focused on food and history. Aryaduta Hotel Medan and Grand Aston City Hall are the anchors here. Rates IDR 700,000 to 1,400,000 per night (SGD 60 to 120).

Petisah / Jalan Diponegoro is the modern district with JW Marriott Medan, Adimulia Hotel, and Grand Swiss-Belhotel. Better Grab pickup, newer rooms, more retail. Rates IDR 900,000 to 2,200,000 per night (SGD 76 to 185).

Cambridge / Sun Plaza area is convenient for shopping-heavy weekends with Cambridge Hotel and mall access. Less atmospheric.

5. Food: what to eat and where

Medan food is arguably the most underrated regional Indonesian cuisine, drawing on Sumatran, Chinese, Indian and Aceh traditions.

Nasi Padang at Merdeka Walk warungs or Pagi Sore for beef rendang, gulai ikan, sambal ijo.

Bihun Bebek Kumango on Jalan Kumango for the signature Medan duck vermicelli.

Soto Medan Sinar Pagi for the coconut-milk-based Medan soto.

Mie Aceh Titi Bobrok for spicy Aceh-style noodles with crab or seafood.

Bika Ambon Zulaikha or Meranti for the honeycomb-textured yellow cake that is Medan's signature take-home gift.

Durian Ucok is the famous roadside durian institution on Jalan Wahid Hasyim.

Budget IDR 60,000 to 200,000 per meal (SGD 5 to 17) at local establishments. Hotel restaurants at Adimulia and JW Marriott will run IDR 250,000 to 500,000 per meal.

Most Medan food is halal by default given North Sumatra demographics; the pork exceptions are clearly signposted (mostly the Chinese-Medan bakmi houses in Kesawan). Verify signage if you have strict dietary requirements.

6. Day trips: Lake Toba is a stretch, Bukit Lawang is closer

Lake Toba (Danau Toba) is 175 kilometres and 4 to 4.5 hours south by car. It is genuinely spectacular (largest volcanic lake in the world) but doing it as a day trip from Medan is 8 to 10 hours of car time. If Toba is the goal, allow three nights minimum: one Medan, two Parapat or Samosir Island. Alternative: fly Silangit Airport (DTB) direct on Batik Air Indonesia from Medan or Jakarta.

Bukit Lawang for Gunung Leuser National Park and orangutan trekking is 3 hours by car (95 kilometres). Better as an overnight than a day trip.

Berastagi in the highlands is 2 hours by car and works as a day trip for the volcano views (Mount Sinabung, Mount Sibayak) and Sunday market.

For a two-night weekend, skip the day trips and go deep on Medan city.

7. Money, eSIM, and safety
