Let’s face it, mobile data is something that has become a necessity in this day and age. If you’re stepping out of your home, you probably need a data plan to work a myriad of apps. You need Waze to get from point A to point B, you need your chat apps (we like Telegram!) to communicate with your colleagues and you need your social media to keep updated with all your friends. You get the picture! None of these can function unless you’re connected to the internet.

1. What’s Your Budget?

If you don’t have much to spare every month for your telecommunications bill, then you’re looking for the best value for money package. The most affordable packages in Singapore is at least 5GB of data per month, with a SIM only plan. However, all these packages are tied down to a 12-month contract. Their monthly price is about $20 to $28, which is something quite affordable if you’re a student or young working adult.

The 5-6 GB data cap, however, means that you have to have a steady Wifi somewhere, whether it’s at home, on campus, at the office or some cafe that you always hang out at. It also means that you probably can’t do things like heavy streaming or gaming from your phone. The price point is something worth considering though if you’re only using it for basic apps like Facebook, Instagram or chat apps.

2. Do You Want to be Tied Down by a Contract?

There are actually a ton of mobile data packages available which don’t tie you down to any contract at all. The prices of these contract-free packages depend on how much data you want. One of the most basic packages is offered by Singtel, with 3GB of data and no talk time for $20 a month. On the other end of the spectrum, Zero 1 is offering unlimited data at $29.99 but the 4G speed stops after the first 3GB.

The benefit of having a contract-free sim is that you can switch to another telco at any time if you’re unsatisfied with their services. Unfortunately, contract-free SIM cards are often slightly pricier than those under a 12-month contract.

3. How Much Data Do You Need?

This is probably the most important question you have to ask yourself. Affordable SIM-only plans in Singapore largely range about $40 t0$50 a month with about 10-15GB of data. There are also plans that offer unlimited data on the weekends in addition to whatever you use on the weekdays. The obvious downside is, of course, that you’ll have to be tied down for at least a year.

4. Do You Want a Phone Too?

Mobile data plans nowadays come packaged with a phone too, meaning that you obtain a mobile phone together with your SIM data plan, and pay for both the phone and the data together every month. Phone + data plans are varied and the typical packages offer data in the 5GB range for a 2-year contract to the 10GB range for no contracts. The attraction of these packages is that the phones here are often cheaper than buying the device alone at other retailers.
