If you don’t take hundreds of Instagram stories on your trip to make your followers envious, are you really travelling?

Despite Japan’s high-tech landscape, public WiFi coverage is far from the best, even in Tokyo. A pocket WiFi device or data SIM card is still more reliable when you travel to Japan. So this begs the question (also asked by a fellow ShopBack community member), should you get a pocket WiFi device or a SIM card? Plus, what’s the best out there for unlimited data in Japan?

Due to the possible language barrier of renting/ buying data from a provider in Japan, these recommendations are based in Singapore or offer pick-up in Singapore.

Pocket WiFi

Pocket WiFi is essentially a mobile hotspot that can be connected to multiple devices. This may help when travelling in a group but only if the group doesn’t separate. Plus, the device needs to be charged and carried along. As long as your group doesn’t separate too often and you have a portable charger on hand, a pocket WiFi device is fuss-free.

Fair Usage Policy

Although many of the providers use the word ‘unlimited’, all data usage by pocket WiFi devices and SIM cards is limited by fair usage policy. This essentially means that all data usage will be capped at a certain limit set by the mobile network company to ensure that other users are not affected by excessive use by others. Users will still be connected to the internet albeit at much slower speeds.

If you’re still looking for more flexible options or prefer to think about it after you land, we suggest buying SIM cards from a BIC Camera or Yodobashi Camera store. Tourist SIM cards are available there as well. If you are fairly confident in your Japanese, you may consider this option.
