AVITA LIBER Laptop Review – Highly Customizable and Stylish
Earlier in May 2017, US technology lifestyle brand AVITA launched the AVITA LIBER laptop – a highly customizable and stylish notebook that combines fashion with performance. Building on the back of this successful launch and their subsequent entry into Hong Kong, AVITA is bringing the LIBER to Singapore. Already, AVITA is facing an uphill battle, as it has to fend off larger more established rivals in the space. The likes of HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Apple take up the lion’s share of devices shipped in 2017 and unseating them will not be an easy task. Does the LIBER have what it takes? Read on to find out.
*We would like to thank AVITA for sending us this production unit for review.
Design: Customize it
Without a doubt, this is one sexy laptop. The unit we received came in the vibrant Urban Ruby color, which is sure to stand out in a sea of monochromatic laptops. Currently, the laptop comes in Cloud Silver, Champagne, Gold, Matte Black, Pearl White, Princess Pink, Angel Blue, and Space Grey with more color options to be added at a later date. Moreover, build quality for this laptop is really solid as well, mostly due to its lightweight metallic body and slim chassis.
In addition, AVITA will be collaborating with local designers and design institutions to create and produce customized casing patterns. The company also plans to roll out a self-service customization platform in 2018 which enables customers to create their own casing to reflect their personal fashion and style.
In The Box
The LIBER came in a nice eco-friendly cardboard box that protected the laptop well without excessive packaging. Included in the box is its proprietary charger, mini HDMI to HDMI Adapter, microfiber cloth, standard literature and a cloth bag to cover your laptop. Despite the proprietary charger, this laptop charges via USB-C as well.

The unit we received was the 13.3 inch model with Intel Core i5-7Y54 Processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD that retails on Hachi.tech for $1,199.00. The laptop also comes in other configurations that range from $699 to $1,699. However, we recommend the $1,1199.00 configuration as it hits the sweet spot between price and specifications. In addition, we will be looking at popular similarly priced notebooks and see how this laptop stacks up.

Comparatively, the AVITA LIBER provides good value for money. Specs for all three laptops are pretty similar across the board. However, the AVITA LIBER provides a bigger SSD at a lower price. One other thing to note is that although the MacBook Air is higher resolution, it is using a TN screen.
However, the only concerning thing about the LIBER is that it is running a 4.5-watt Kaby Lake-Y chip which is generally less powerful than comparable 15-watt Kaby Lake-U chips that the XPS 13 and MacBook Air are using. Further details about the performance will be provided in the Benchmark section.
The AVITA LIBER provides a rather comprehensive port selection. On the right, there is the power port, a USB 3.0 A port, USB 3.0 Type-C port (Display-out and Charging), 3.5mm Mic/Headphone combo jack, mini HDMI port and a MicroSD card slot. The choice of the MicroSD card slot is puzzling because most photographers and videographers use cameras with full-sized SD cards. On the left side, it is much less crowded as there is only a USB 3.0 A port and a Kensington lock.
As for the display, the LIBER boasts a bright full HD 1920×1080 IPS display that is sharp and has good viewing angles. As for color reproduction, the LIBER provides 72% NTSC coverage, making this good for photo and video editing. The best part, the display can bend back 180 degrees as seen in the picture. However, a downside of this is that the screen is quite wobbly in use, making the laptop feel a bit more ‘cheap.’
Audio wise, the AVITA LIBER’s stereo speakers are loud and crisp, albeit lacking in bass. Despite this, the speakers are more than good enough for watching YouTube videos, Netflix or listening to music.
Similar to laptops in this price range, the 720p webcam is nothing to shout about. Even in good light, there is a noticeable amount of grain in the picture. However, it is still a perfectly serviceable webcam for video calls.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The LIBER features an island-style keyboard with keys that are spaced apart comfortably and offer up a decent amount of travel. On TypingTest.com we achieved a rate of 55 words per minute for the typing test. In addition, the keyboard has a back-light for use in dark places. As for the touchpad, the large surface area makes it a good experience. Performing gestures and scrolling were a breeze because of this.
To measure the performance, we put the laptop through PCMark 10, here are the results:
PCMark 10 Score: 2465.0
Digital Content Creation: 1687.0
From the results, it is clear that the Avita Liber is not a laptop built for gaming as it lags behind the average Office PC. Otherwise, this laptop is perfectly serviceable for everyday tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, and consuming media.
AVITA rates the battery life at 10 hours of mixed use with its 36 watt-hour cell. To test this claim, we used the AVITA LIBER for this review. With the screen set at 60% brightness, we used this laptop to write this article, watch Youtube videos, run benchmarks and listen to music while connected to Wifi. This gave us 6 hours of use which is pretty average for an ultrabook in its class.
The Avita Liber is a good first attempt at a laptop. With its stylish good looks, solid build quality, affordable price and endless customization options – this laptop can do the job for many. However, the notebook is hamstrung by its average battery life and its less than powerful processor. Despite these shortcomings, this laptop is still a good choice for the casual user who values good design and customization.
The AVITA LIBER laptop retails from S$699 to S$1699 and will be available exclusively at Challenger Singapore stores and on hachi.tech. What’s more, get deals, coupons and up 3% cashback when you buy your laptop on hachi.tech with ShopBack.
