Singles’ Day is undeniably one of the biggest annual shopping events in the region. What started as an Alibaba sale, has become a shopping period with increased traction all over APAC.  The big names in e-retail have joined the party adding to the popularity of the day by launching special deals on the days before 11 November. Here we take a glance at the highlights of this 11.11 sale with ShopFest.

This Single’s Day campaign was a busy weekend for shops and shoppers alike with orders growing 10x when compared to a regular non-sales weekend. Mobile shopping continued to grow in importance with more than 78% of the traffic happening in-app. Although desktop continues to be an effective channel for e-commerce, users are increasingly more engaged with their smartphones and it becomes even more convenient to shop on mobile. These 11.11 offers promised irresistible with prices reductions of 70%, shake games and giveaways, and customers answered the call. Shoppers were ready to spend more during this period to take the opportunity to get their most wanted products at a discounted rate. Average spend per user was particularly high in Australia, Taiwan and Singapore.

This Singles’ Day sale fell conveniently over the weekend, leaving more time for consumers to browse, compare and shop. Buyers made the most of the main capaign days by staying late and getting up early to be the first ones to add to cart.

Buyers in Singapore and Malaysia didn’t lose any time and queued up to buy on the dot, while in Indonesia and the Philippines, customers preferred to shop during the early morning.

Both local and international brands participated in Singles’ Day this year. Marketplaces take the pole position as the most popular shops with the majority of shoppers heading (in no specific order) to Lazada, Shopee and Qoo10 to shop and participate in the different giveaways, games and promos offered.

In terms of shopping, although home & living and electronics are still attractive categories to shop, health & beauty, fashion and travel managed to capture a larger chunk of shoppers due to their attractive discounts and cashback upsize campaigns during this period. Deals on different travel merchants were particularly compelling with discounts up to 8% and cashback upsizes up to 9%.

In terms of popular products and brands, costumers ran to buy phones, laptops, smart watches, gaming consoles and several home appliances along with branded clothing, makeup items and groceries.

Big sales aren’t over

We are on the eve of another grand sales period, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And the expectations are that the offers for these key dates will rival the ones of the recent 11.11.
